An Intro to Blue Thumb and Raingardens
Learn about the Blue Thumb program and resources available for planting projects that benefit local lakes, wetlands and streams. We will focus specifically on designing and installing raingardens, as well as options for landscaping shoreline on lake and wetland edges.
Get excited with photos of beautiful and affordable gardens, learn which native plants to use for different parts of your yard and find out how to build new gardens that integrate naturally with your existing landscaping while also helping to keep local lakes and wetlands clean. Workshop participants will leave with a packet of information as well as resources for design and installation assistance.
Blue Thumb plantings like native gardens, raingardens and shoreline plantings are not only good for water quality, but also provide many other benefits. Native plants do not require mowing, fertilizing or pesticides. After the first year, they don’t even need to be watered! Blue Thumb gardens attract birds and butterflies and discourage geese from congregating. Raingardens are especially good for controlling erosion, wet spots and other drainage issues, while shoreline plantings are an effective method for stabilizing lake and wetland edges.
Registration required.
This workshop is supported locally by South Washington, Ramsey Washington - Metro, and Valley Branch Watershed Districts.
The Washington Conservation District can provide free site visits after the workshop to help make dream gardens a reality, and people living in high priority areas may even qualify for grants to install raingardens and shoreline planting projects.
